Early on Tuesday morning, August 18, a pedestrian died in a hit and run in Valdosta.
According to Georgia State Patrol, the incident happened shortly before 6 a.m. just east of mile marker 19 on Highway 84 near CCC Road. It appears that the pedestrian, 38 year old Johnny Eugene Roe of Valdosta was walking down or walking across the westbound lanes of the highway when he was hit in the middle of the left westbound lane. Having examined the damage at the scene, troopers believed that he was hit by a silver 1999 to 2002 Jeep Cherokee. He was killed outright by the impact.
The suspect Jeep was located shortly afterwards and it showed minor damage. The driver of the Jeep was under the impression that he had hit a deer which is why he said he had not stopped at the scene.
The Georgia State Patrol is continuing to investigate and are asking any witnesses to come forward. There is also a possibility that Roe was run over more than once so they are also asking drivers to come forward if they believe they may have struck something in the area.
