Safety Tips on Driving Abroad

Driving abroad can be a fun and exhilarating experience but in order to make it as safe and stress free as possible, follow these few simple tips.

First do some research and learn a little about the country’s driving laws from the United States embassy in the country or the local tourism office. You may be able to drive on your American license but some insist you have an International Driving Permit or IDP which you can obtain easily from the AA and the AAA. You should carry both with you at all times.

Check to see if your own motor insurance will cover you abroad and if not, ensure you take out the maximum coverage you can.

Always wear your seatbelt, whether it is the law or not and never ever drink and drive, even if you see the local people driving with a beer in their hand.

If the rule for the country you are in is to drive on the left, before you hit the busy roads, practice a little on the back roads or a less populated area to get used to the different seating arrangement and the driving.

Safety Features for Vehicle Handling

It is time to change your vehicle but remember to look at all the safety features your new or used car might have, even those you cannot see such as vehicle handing.

The way the vehicle will handle itself can help to avoid an accident and one important safety feature is traction control which will control how much the drive wheels will slip when you increase power. The system will change the power output of the engine and some will actually brake as you accelerate and help prevent skids. It is normally found in those vehicles which have a four wheel anti lock brake system.

All wheel drive systems ensure that both front and rear wheels have power which helps with traction especially in the snow, ice and mud.

Finally, electronic stability control helps you to maintain control during extreme steering situations such as when a vehicle begins to oversteer or understeer and the system then applies the brake to only one wheel which helps to correct the problem and should reduce the likelihood of the vehicle rolling over.

Valdosta Man Died in Three 18 wheeler Collision

On Monday, October 19, a Valdosta man died in an accident on Interstate 10.

According to authorities the accident happened at around 4.30 p.m. on the Interstate 10 in Hancock County. An 18 wheeler being driven by 44 year old Lewis Peak of Valdosta struck a semi driven by 59 year old Razmik Khachikyan, of Panorama City, California. The impact caused both trucks to become entangled and burst into flames.

Khachikyan’s truck also struck the rear of a tanker driven by 65 year old Roger Eppler, of Jasper, Texas. Peak was trapped in his truck and died at the scene, Khachikyan was uninjured and Eppler suffered moderate injuries.

The incident was that severe that the interstate was closed overnight in Diamondhead as fire departments from Diamondhead, Hancock, and Harrison Counties worked with the police to transport hazardous material from one of the trailers in to another trailer and moved to safety.

The aftermath of the incident could still be seen the next morning and Highway Patrol confirmed that this accident is likely to be under investigation for some time.

Three Injured in Two Vehicle Crash

On Tuesday, September 8, three people were injured in a two vehicle crash.

According to Georgia State Patrol, the accident happened at the intersection of Clay Road and New Statenville Highway shortly after 3.30 p.m.

The accident involved a log truck belonging to North Star Trucking Company of Live Oak, Florida and a vehicle driven by Tarnesha Baker of Valdosta who claimed that as she was travelling west on New Statenville Highway her brakes failed as she crossed the intersection in front of the truck. As Baker was unable to stop in time, the log truck struck the driver’s side of her car injuring her and two passengers in her vehicle.

Baker and her passengers were taken to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. While Baker’s injures did not seem life threatening, the extent of the passengers injuries were unknown. The truck driver was uninjured.

Police stated that charges may be brought against Baker after an examination of the car is carried out to determine if the brakes were faulty as claimed.

Pedestrian Died in a Hit and Run

Early on Tuesday morning, August 18, a pedestrian died in a hit and run in Valdosta.

According to Georgia State Patrol, the incident happened shortly before 6 a.m. just east of mile marker 19 on Highway 84 near CCC Road. It appears that the pedestrian, 38 year old Johnny Eugene Roe of Valdosta was walking down or walking across the westbound lanes of the highway when he was hit in the middle of the left westbound lane. Having examined the damage at the scene, troopers believed that he was hit by a silver 1999 to 2002 Jeep Cherokee. He was killed outright by the impact.

The suspect Jeep was located shortly afterwards and it showed minor damage. The driver of the Jeep was under the impression that he had hit a deer which is why he said he had not stopped at the scene.

The Georgia State Patrol is continuing to investigate and are asking any witnesses to come forward. There is also a possibility that Roe was run over more than once so they are also asking drivers to come forward if they believe they may have struck something in the area.

Valdosta Man was Convicted Following a Fatal Traffic Accident

On Thursday, August 6, a Valdosta man was convicted in connection with a fatal traffic accident.

Last year, on September 25, there was an accident which killed 76 year old George Stripling. Deshawn Watts, aged 34 was driving a blue 2005 Mercedes CLK500 southbound on South Lee Street when he hit the front driver’s side door of Stripling’s tan 2000 Ford Taurus, which was traveling east in the 500 block of East Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Stripling was taken to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment but died later that evening.

Watts was originally charged with homicide by vehicle in the first degree, reckless driving, improper passing and disregarding a traffic control device. However the defense successfully argued the case for a lesser charge and the jury determined he was not driving recklessly but was following Stripling’s vehicle too closely and he was convicted of a misdemeanor vehicular homicide.

Watts could face a 12 month sentence to be served either in jail or on probation or a combination of both plus a $1,000 fine for the homicide charge. He faces additional time and fines for the traffic charges, which in total could add up to three years in jail.

Watts will be sentenced in October following the completion of a pre-sentencing investigation.
