Man Dies Having Been Injured in a Wreck

On Thursday, July 7, a man from Mitchell County died having been injured in a wreck on May 16.

The accident happened when George “Sambo” McLeod Jr. was driving a semi tractor trailer which left the roadway near Ellenton around midnight. The truck went off the west shoulder of the road, struck a ditch embankment with the right side of the truck then hit a culvert. McLeod was airlifted to a Macon hospital, and died on Thursday at Willson Hospice in Albany.

Some three days after, on May 19 there was another big rig accident in Colquitt County when 64 year od Freddy Norris of Valdosta crashed on Highway 133 North about four miles south of Doerun. He was hauling a tanker trailer carrying used motor oil and his truck burst into flames. A bystander, Murphy, a county employee tried to pull him from the rig but to no avail.

Two Elderly Ladies Killed in an Accident

On Sunday, November 29, two elderly ladies were killed in an accident with a semi in Thomasville.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the accident happened on Sunday afternoon at the intersection of the US Highway 84 Bypass and Georgia Highway 3 which is also known as U.S. Highway 319. A semi tractor trailer being driven by 54 year old Paul Jones and traveling east on the US Highway 84 Bypass failed to stop at a red light. He then hit a Kia Forte which was traveling north on Georgia Highway 3 occupied by 81 year old Everette Pollack and 84 year old Jo Ann Tuvell. Both ladies died at the scene.

According to investigators, Jones was distracted as he was trying to remove a headset for his cell phone when he drove through the light and smashed into the car.

Charges against Jones are pending once the investigation has been completed.

Valdosta Man Died in Three 18 wheeler Collision

On Monday, October 19, a Valdosta man died in an accident on Interstate 10.

According to authorities the accident happened at around 4.30 p.m. on the Interstate 10 in Hancock County. An 18 wheeler being driven by 44 year old Lewis Peak of Valdosta struck a semi driven by 59 year old Razmik Khachikyan, of Panorama City, California. The impact caused both trucks to become entangled and burst into flames.

Khachikyan’s truck also struck the rear of a tanker driven by 65 year old Roger Eppler, of Jasper, Texas. Peak was trapped in his truck and died at the scene, Khachikyan was uninjured and Eppler suffered moderate injuries.

The incident was that severe that the interstate was closed overnight in Diamondhead as fire departments from Diamondhead, Hancock, and Harrison Counties worked with the police to transport hazardous material from one of the trailers in to another trailer and moved to safety.

The aftermath of the incident could still be seen the next morning and Highway Patrol confirmed that this accident is likely to be under investigation for some time.
